A beautiful cake does not have to break the bank. There are many ways to save money and still have the dessert you want at your wedding reception.

The wedding cake is often an unexpected expense in the wedding budget. But with a few tricks, brides on shoestring budgets can get the cake of their dreams.

Wedding Cake Pictures

Choosing a cheaper cake does not mean compromising on style and taste. Look at some cake photos online, or at the local bakery for inspiration. For brides looking for a big cake on a budget, look for simple styles, without a lot of embellishments, or other effects, such as fountains or lighting.

For brides who want a more dramatic look, it is possible, but the size of the cake will likely have to be much smaller. Look through pictures for examples of small cakes with lots of personality. Also, look for cake styles that lend themselves to having a fake layer.

Print out a few examples and take them to the local baker or cake designer for a consultation on what can be done, within budget. Be honest with the baker; let him or her know the budget restraints.

Money Saving Ideas

  • Supermarket Cakes - They may not offer as much selection, but these cakes will be cheaper than traditional bakery cakes.
  • Avoid the Cutting Fee - Some venues charge a cutting fee if the cake is brought in from an outside source. Serve wedding cupcakes, to avoid that fee.
  • Cake Flavors and Filling - Avoid exotic flavors and fillings. Some bakers make each layer of the cake a different flavor, but keeping the selection to one or two flavors will also help to cut costs.
  • Fake the Details - Details like sugar flowers can be expensive, so instead, use a few real flowers to decorate the cake. Candied fruit, chocolates and some other candies can also be arranged attractively to decorate a simple cake.

Make Wedding Cake From Scratch

It may take some considerable planning, but making the wedding cake is an option. It is recommend for brides with some previous baking experience to attempt this task. Alternatively, find a friend or relative with the skills to create a wedding cake, who is willing to make it for free, or for the cost of the ingredients.

There are many wedding cake recipes available in cookbooks and online. Fruit cake is a traditional choice, but for a rich chocolate dessert, try this White Chocolate and Rosebud Wedding Cake.

Do a test run of both the cake and the decorating. It is a good idea to practice and make adjustments as necessary. Guests will be impressed with the effort put into making a homemade wedding cake.
